Quantum communications: a way toward a secure and greener internet
The global ITN energy consumption is increasing. Wireless and data centers are the main contributors, and network energy consumption is mainly dominated by the edge equipment. Orange is also worried of respecting the environment by introducing low energy technologies.
Telco operators like Orange have to offer more data rate per user, lower latency, higher availability and a multitude of connected objects. All these data need to be secured with a minimal CO2 footprint.
Quantum communication based on QKD and integrated photonics is the way to provide secure data with low greenhouse impact. QKD technologies are the lowest energy way to detect an eavesdropper. Quantum communication is the first milestone of a quantum internet. All quantum technologies take advantages to higher energy efficiency than classical technologies. Quantum world is able to raise this challenge, a green and secure internet.
